Na křídlech bájného fénixe

Milé milovnice a vážení ctitelé kvalitní hudby, Česká republika produkuje mnoho hudebních festivalů, které lépe či hůře bojují o přízeň veřejnosti. Jsou to hlavně Lípa Musica, Svatováclavský hudební festival, Mezinárodní festival komorní hudby Kutná Hora, Festival Troja a Letní slavnosti staré hudby, nejkvalitnější přehlídka především barokní a renesanční hudby v Praze. Jejich 27. ročník začne 16. července a skončí 5. srpna. Nebudu vršit fráze o programu, ostatně jej najdete na www.letnislavnosti.cz, ale coby pozvánku otisknu vyznání klíčových osobností festivalu – vedoucí dramaturgyně a ředitelky. Luboš Stehlík, editor

Hendrick de Clerck (1560–1630), The Judgement of Midas, ca 1620. Soutěž mezi Apollónem
a Panem a Midasův soud. Apollón právě hraje, s Athénou po boku. Na druhé straně vidíme
krále Midase s oslíma ušima a Pana s Panovou flétnou, který radostně vyhazuje ruku do
vzduchu. / The contest between Apollo and Pan, and the Judgement of Midas. Apollo plays,
with Athena by his side. On the other side, King Midas appears with ass’s ears, while Pan,
holding his panpipes, raises his arm joyfully.

Emblémem 27. ročníku MHF Letní slavnosti staré hudby je jeden z nejvýznamnějších a nejpozoruhodnějších mytologických motivů napříč kulturami i tisíciletími – ohnivý pták fénix.

On the Wings of the Mythical Phoenix

The emblem of the 27th edition of the Summer Festivities of Early Music is the phoenix, the fiery bird – one of the most significant and enduring mythological motifs across cultures and millennia. This mythical creature, shrouded in legend, symbolises cosmic order and the resilience of the spirit; it bolsters the courage of those with pure hearts, serving as a beacon of hope and a bridge between worlds.

On the magical wings of the phoenix, the festival brings together a mosaic of seven imaginatively curated projects, each setting out in pursuit of treasures drawn from European and wider musical history. Myths and legends, the collective memory and soul of civilisation, form the cornerstone of these programmes. It was through myths and legends that people sought to explain natural phenomena, answer questions about the origins of the world, life and death, and preserve shared notions of social values, principles and ideals. Thanks to their universal appeal, myths and legends remain a constant source of inspiration for all forms of art.

Audiences can look forward to modern-day premieres, artists making their debut on Czech stages, unusual historical musical instruments, and works conceived especially for this festival… The accompanying programme features a masterclass for cornett and recorder players and, above all, the 10th anniversary edition of the Versailles Academy’s international courses, where the next generation of early music performers gains first-hand insight into the French Baroque repertoire.

The phoenix is a symbol of rebirth; its song is said to possess magical powers, and its tears are believed to have healing properties. I hope that the concerts of the 2026 Summer Festivities of Early Music will touch our listeners’ souls in much the same way.

A nejen jí! Zazpívá rozličné postavy z antické i „anglické“ mytologie.

Letošní ročník symbolicky zakončí árie bohyně Fámy v barokně metaforickém smyslu ‒ okřídlená mladá žena za zvuku trubky hlásá nesmrtelnost a slávu! Ať žijí Letní slavnosti!

The Kisses of the Muses

– together with the unique atmosphere of Prague’s concert halls, gardens and churches – have accompanied the Summer Festivities of Early Music for 27 years. This year’s theme, inspired by classical mythology, tales of saints, and the works of celebrated composers, will be brought vividly to life by a host of artists from around the world: legends of historical informed performance practice, as well as rising stars whose artistry is already the talk of the legendary Mount Parnassus… I am looking forward to a mystical evening with the British vocal ensemble Stile Antico; to an Orphean programme led by the Belgian baritone and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Achten; to the phenomenal Spanish violinist Miriam Hontana; and to the Middle Eastern melodies that Kiya Tabassian and Waed Bou Hassoun will present.

Following his recent resounding success at the Opéra national de Paris in the role of the heroic Hercules, the charismatic bass-baritone Andreas Wolf will once again appear in the title role at the closing concert of the Summer Festivities. Yet this legendary hero will not be the only role he takes on. He will embody a wide range of figures from classical mythology and the rich world of English legends. The enraged cyclops Polyphemus will be followed by the legendary singer Timotheus, whose singing was so powerful that it moved Alexander the Great to set fire to Persepolis. I can’t wait to hear the mesmerising aria of Somnus, god of sleep, as well as the legendary “Cold Song” from Purcell’s King Arthur.

Greek mythology also inspired the librettist Picander, whose texts Johann Sebastian Bach set in his secular cantatas. How vividly Bach portrayed the laughter of the god Aeolus, which Pallas Athena came to soothe, or Pan’s bucolic dance, so irresistibly exuberant that one can hardly help siding with King Midas against Apollo… It is believed that Bach composed this cantata for himself; its message can be interpreted as a defence of his own art. This year’s festival will come to a symbolic close with the aria of Fama, the goddess of Fame – a winged young woman who, to the sound of trumpets, proclaims immortality and glory in true Baroque allegorical fashion. Long live the Summer Festivities of Early Music!
